The Financial Planning Association says it is supporting diversity in financial planning with three financial awards.

The group’s Diversity Scholarships will fund the participation of three individuals at this year’s FPA Annual Conference, being held Oct. 2-4 in Nashville.

“Diversity among our [23,000-plus] members, and among those they serve, is a central quality of our association that is unique and special to our association,” explained FPA President Shannon J. Pike, CFP,in a statement. “FPA is a dynamic community of professionals who are representative of the increasingly diverse world within which we live.”

This year’s diversity scholarship recipients are:

  • Kathleen Boyd, a Ph.D. student at Kansas State University specializing in financial planning and therapy, a leader of the FPA of Orange County, California, and founder of Long Beach Financial Planning Day;
  • Roger Ma, CFP, founder of Lifelaidout, LLC, in New York, active in pro bono financial planning and with programs offered and supported by the FPA of New York.
  • Divam Mehta, CFP, ChFC, president of Mehta Financial Group in Richmond, Virginia; and a leader in the Indian-American community where he is also providing pro bono support and education.

The FPA’s Diversity Scholarship Program is sponsored by the group’s Diversity Committee, which aims to “develop strategies to raise awareness and promote inclusiveness of diverse communities” in financial planning.
