Several years ago, the website WheresGeorge.com was launched to track the movement of money: type in the serial number of a dollar bill and you can see who had it last, who gets it next, and where the bill is being spent. It is a neat reminder of money’s portability. But a theoretical physicist recently plumbed the depths of WheresGeorge.com to map where all of the money in its database is moving, and it turns out that according to our money, the U.S. is really made up of about 15 economic states that have little to do with political state boundaries. Consider that the next time you’re drafting up sales territory maps.
