Alleghany County, Pa., has received a $200,000 grant from the Highmark Foundation to support a program seeking to improve post-partum depression treatment for low-income pregnant women or mothers in the county.

The grant to the county’s Department of Human Services is among $700,700 in second-quarter grants to 5 nonprofit health organizations throughout Pennsylvania recently approved by the foundation’s board as part of its continuing effort to improve community health.

The Highmark Foundation, Pittsburgh, is a unit of Highmark Blue Shield, which serves the 21 counties of central Pennsylvania and the Lehigh Valley. Highmark Blue Shield also provides services with Blue Cross Plans in northeastern and southeastern Pennsylvania.

Other Highmark grants included $225,000 to the Spina Bifida Association of Western Pennsylvania; $150,000 to the Pennsylvania Higher Education Foundation; $65,700 to the Spanish American Civic Association; and $60,000 to the Allegheny County Department of Human Services Area Agency on Aging.

The grant to the Spina Bifida Association will help support a pilot wellness program over the next 3 years for individuals born with the disability. The money will help pay for professionals who would work with other health care professionals to identify the needs of a patient and then create an individualized plan of care, Highmark officials said.
