Walgreen Plans 12 More Metro Area Stores

DETROIT-The Deerfield, IL-based pharmacy giant says it will open at least 12 new stores in the Detroit area over the next 18 months, giving it 150 in the state. Providence, RI-based CVS is No. 1 in the Detroit area with 212 stores.

DETROIT-Drugstore chain Walgreen Co. says it will open at least 12 new locations in the Detroit region over the next 18 months. The Deerfield, IL-based company plans two more stores in Sterling Heights and Garden City before the end of this year and locations planned in Dearborn Heights, St. Clair Shores, Monroe and Sterling Heights for 2005.

At least six other locations have not yet been named by the company. Walgreen, the nation’s largest drug store chain, already has 138 locations around the state.

Nationally, Metro Detroit was the fourth-largest drugstore market, with $5.6 billion in sales last year, according to the Chain Drug Review, a trade publication. CVS is the Detroit area’s largest drug store chain, with some 212 stores.
