Miller & Solomon Qualifies for Construction Safety Partnership

MIAMI-Miller & Solomon General Contractors has become the first company in Florida to qualify for ranking in the Construction Health and Safety Excellence Partnership. CHASE is an agreement of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration and the South Florida chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America to set higher safety standards for Florida’s construction industry.

Contractors and subcontractors who want to participate in the program go through an intense review and must demonstrate adequate on-site safety programs and employee training. Then they get ranked on one of three levels of the CHASE standards–blue is for excellence, white is for mid-ranking, and red is for low ranking.

Miller & Solomon, which specializes in sizable commercial projects, received a white ranking. The company’s workers finished training in fall protection, hazard communication and trenching evacuation. ”The philosophy at Miller & Solomon is that we can build a better product if the job site is safe for everyone,” Leon Williams, the company’s safety director, said in a statement.

The site that qualifies is Nova Southeastern University’s H. Wayne Huizenga School of Business and Entrepreneurship in Fort Lauderdale, FL, which had 232 days in a row without an injury.

Florida ranks third in the country in construction job-related fatalities behind Texas and California, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and the fatalities are particularly high in South Florida, according to OSHA.
