WASHINGTON, DC-Anacostia Waterfront Corp. has begun phase one of a multi-stage redevelopment along Hill East Waterfront, also known as Reservation 13. The 66-acre site, which recently was transferred to AWC from the federal government, as reported by GlobeSt.com, will be transformed into a one-million-sf mixed-use development.

The beginning phase calls for an environmental abatement on the buildings within the plot, including a building on the southeastern portion of the former DC General Hospital site.

“This remediation work represents the visible beginning of tens of millions of dollars of infrastructure upgrades and improvements to prepare the site for redevelopment,” says Calvin Gladney, AWC VP and Hill East Waterfront project manager, in a statement.

“Completing this phase is the first step toward preparing for construction that will extend Massachusetts Avenue down to the Anacostia River and create an accessible and visible Waterfront for community and District residents,” he says

AWC has contracted with EEC, a certified LSDBE firm, to do the environmental abatement work on the former hospital site, also known as building 25. When the remediation is complete thus summer, building 25 will be demolished, along with several other buildings.

One exception will be the original Anne Archbold Hall, a historic landmark constructed almost 80 years old. AWC will remediate the building, stabilize the structure, and replace the roof.
