GLENDALE, AZ-The City of Glendale is planning to break ground early next year on a $16-million Field Operations Complex that will serve as a storage, equipment and maintenance facility for city vehicles. A first-quarter 2004 delivery is planned.

The project consists of a 70,000-sf maintenance facility and 12,000-sf warehouse for the city’s operating supplies. Designed by architects Arrington Watkins, the main maintenance facility at 6210 W. Myrtle St. will house the city’s cars, trucks and heavy equipment, including fire trucks and garbage trucks.

The project is being undertaken because the city has simply outgrown its existing facility. Improvements also will be made to convert some of the existing buildings into offices for the parks and recreation department and the city’s maintenance staff.

Craig Johnson, Glendale assistant engineer, said the city will work closely on the new facility with D.L. Withers Construction of Phoenix, which has been named the project’s construction manager at risk.

“We are utilizing the construction management at risk approach to build our new facility because we wanted to work with the contractor during the design phase to ensure a good quality facility with a minimum need for changes during the construction process,” Johnson said. “Working and planning in advance with the design team we are able to build a facility that will meet our space requirements today and for projected growth over the next 10 years.
