Stop & Shop Eyes 12-Acre Parcel for 63,000-SF Store

HALIFAX, MA-Stop & Shop wants to be the first large supermarket chain in town as its proposal to build a 63,000-sf store on a 12-acre parcel on Plymouth Street demonstrates.

Sandra Nolan, secretary to the town’s planning board, tells GlobeSt.com that the Quincy-based company submitted a proposal to develop the store as well as 4,400-sf of retail space. While the town has several small convenience stores, it has no large supermarket.

Nolan notes that this is not Stop & Shop’s first attempt to build a store at this location. Last year they developed a plan that called for a smaller store with about five times as much retail space as the current proposal but Nolan says that that plan did not have enough parking to meet the town’s requirements.

The current owner of the site is Boston-based JPA Corp. It is still unclear whether Stop & Shop will acquire the parcel or lease it from the company.
