REDWOOD CITY, CA-A local businessman developer is planning a 400-slip marina to be built at the terminus of Seaport Boulevard. Westpoint Marina, proposed by Pinnacle Systems CEO Mark Sanders, has already passed its environmental review and is now awaiting the city council’s OK.

The new marina, estimated at $15 million, would offer South Bay boat owners a place to warehouse, repair and service their boats, possibly luring boaters back to the Peninsula. Sander will use 35 acres of the 42 acres he purchased from Cargill Salt to build the marina. The remainder will go to preserving the Greco Island wildlife refuge.

Many of the city’s marinas are shutting down, with few proposals to replace them. This year, the city’s 390-berth Peninsula Marina was shut down and turned into a residential and office community. Other marinas, including Pete’s Harbor and Docktown Marina, are being eyed by developers who want to build housing and offices.

Live-aboard boaters and commercial boat owners stand to benefit from the proposed marina, as many lost their homes and docking space with the closure of the Peninsula Marina.
