DALLAS-Hillwood has been accorded the prestigious Phoenix Award for the cleanup of its Victory development, a 72-acre, mixed-use infill site in Dallas.

Hillwood is one of 10 regional recipients of the annual honor handed to organizations and individuals for cleanup of environmental contamination at abandoned industrial sites in the interest of economic development. Hillwood snagged award for EPA Region 5. In all, there are 28 projects in 17 states vying for the grand prize, which will be awarded at the National Brownfields Conference set for Sept. 24-26 in Chicago.

As Victory continues to grow and bring a new vitality to downtown Dallas, the significance of this cleanup will be even more apparent,” says Hillwood CEO Rick Patterson. The Victory team includes HBC/Terracon and Halff Associates. Hillwood is partnering with Southwest Sports Realty for the undertaking, which ultimately will include 600,000 sf of entertainment retail, 1,000 residential units, two hotels and four million sf of office space. The recently opened American Airlines Center, home to the Dallas Mavericks and Stars, is the focal piece of the project. Victory also holds an engineering excellence award for environmental projects from the Consulting Engineers Council of Texas.

Cleanup began in 1998 and wrapped up in July 1999. The project managed 750,000 cubic yards of excavation, including the removal to approved disposal facilities of 310,000 cubic yards of contaminated dirt. The property formerly housed a power plant, rail yard, meat-packing facility and landfill. In addition 47,000 cubic yards of concrete from the cooling ponds and grain silos were re-used on-site as base for roads and parkinglots.
