VALHALLA, NY-IBM, headquartered here, reports that it will invest more than $92.7 million, the equivalent of $150 million Canadian, as part of its $5 billion capital program to expand its semiconductor business, to upgrade its Bromont semiconductor assembly plant in the province of Quebec. IBM plans on a hiring 400 additional employees in Bromont in 2001 bringing the plant’s total workforce to approximately 3,400 people.

“The IBM Bromont facility continues to be a strong contributor not only to IBM but also to the Quebec and Canadian economy,” said Bill McClean, vice president, Manufacturing, Development & Operations for IBM Canada Ltd. “The IBM Microelectronics business is facing unprecedented customer demand. Capital investments and people investments are key for IBM Bromont to help meet that demand.”

IBM’s Microelectronics Division announced in October plans to spend $2.5 billion to upgrade its semiconductor chip plant in East Fishkll in Dutchess County, NY.
