SUPERIOR, CO- Colorado’s fastest-growing community in the past 10 years won’t be growing at all, at least not for the next four months.

Superior, a town along the US 36 corridor between Boulder and Denver, has had its population skyrocket 2,156% in the 1990s, going from 276 residents to 7,221. In 1990, the town had lacked running water until Denver-based MDC Holdings Inc., one of the largest public home building companies in the country, had started construction of the 8,000-home Rock Creek subdivision. The increased rooftops have brought big-box retailers and, more recently, high-tech office buildings.

Now, the Superior Town Board is worried it is growing via piecemeal planning instead of in a comprehensive manner. Thus, Superior officials have imposed a four-month building moratorium for commercial and residential development while they review the comprehensive growth plan. The moratorium will expire Feb. 13.
