Seniors Housing Project Gets Zoning Board Approval Despite Opposition

RAHWAY, NJ-Alternative suggestions were a school expansion, new library, even new retail, but the zoning board has backed the proposal of Woodbridge, NJ-based developer Ralph Mocci to build an upscale 140-unit seniors’ housing complex on 4.5 acres. Opponents say the project is too dense for the site, but board members went with the proposal, which was scaled back from an earlier 165-unit plan.

“This will be more of an asset than what we might have had, such as a fast-food restaurant or drive-through bank,” board member Andrew Bryant said at the panel’s Monday night meeting.

Added developer’s attorney Philip Shore, “this fills a void. It’s the only market-based, age-restricted housing in the city.”

A landmark furniture store will be razed to make way for the new Saint Georges Parkview. Units, for residents 55 and up, will be arrayed in two three-story buildings.
