CHARLOTTE-The 160-attorney, full-service law firm of Morris, Manning & Martin, based in Atlanta, has decided to open an office here and then expand through the Southeast. But the firm hasn’t decided how much office space it will need for a planned 10-lawyer office and support staff.

The Charlotte office will be headed up by Bob Donlon, who has left Smith Helms Mulliss & Moore where he concentrated on working with start-up companies.

Some local technology experts say Morris, Manning has the right approach but may find it difficult to succeed in Charlotte’s competitive market. But the law firm thinks the timing is right to establish a technology-oriented practice in the Queen City. Many out-of-town firms have gravitated to Charlotte in recent years because the city has grown as a major financial center.
