OAKLAND, CA-City officials here are working with the port to develop a 250,000-sf convention and exhibition hall that would replace several county-occupied buildings near Interstate 880.

The project is slated for property situated between Webster, Washington, Fifth and Second Streets. Several buildings on the property–currently occupied by the Alameda County coroner, North County Juvenile Services and the county’s General Assistance–would be razed to make room.

The development would include a parking structure with access from Chinatown as well as the downtown Jack London Square area. There also is talk of a new Bay Area Rapid Transit train station in the area.

Port of Oakland director of commercial real estate Omar Benjamin is currently preparing a request for developer proposals, and says the project will likely be discussed at the port commissioners board meeting on Oct. 17.
