Alaska Airlines said last week it had laid off almost 500 ramp employees at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, replacing them with contract workers to cut costs amid rising fuel prices and competition from low-cost carriers. The announcement came the same day a lawsuit was filed by The Air Line Pilots Association, seeking to vacate an arbitrator's decision that handed Alaska pilots a contract with pay cuts averaging 26 percent and higher employee health care contributions.
