Few things are more likely to raise the ire of seasoned general counsel than the sight of private practice partners waltzing straight into plum in-house roles, while their employers ignoring the years of experience already residing in their in-house departments.

In the US, it has become almost commonplace for larger companies to appoint high profile (some would say ‘trophy’) general counsel from the senior ranks of the leading law firms and a number of high profile moves on this side of the Atlantic ( see box, opposite page) might suggest that a similar trend could happen here too.
