In January US President George W Bush called for an end to ‘junk lawsuits’ and a strict nationwide limit on damages that juries can award for pain and suffering in medical negligence suits.
In a country where litigation is common, the president said the court had a duty to “limit the legal consequences of wrongs to a controllable degree and to protect against crushing exposure to liability”.
