Tommy Robertson, a former Mississippi state senator, was accusedof using his position as an attorney on the board of directors ofthe $195 million Singing River Federal Credit Union in Moss Point,Miss., to embezzle more than $484,000, state authorities said Jan.26.

Mississippi State Auditor Stacey Pickering and Jackson CountyDistrict Attorney Tony Lawrence jointly announced that Robertson,59, was indicted on five counts of embezzlement.

He is accused of using his position as board attorney for theSinging River Federal Credit Union to embezzle $484,092 of loanproceeds which he held in trust for the purpose of distributing thefunds in accordance with the applicable loan statements, Pickeringand Lawrence said. The embezzlement scheme allegedly occurred inApril 2013, according to Mississippi authorities.

Robertson, who served in the Mississippi State Senate from 1992to 2008, surrendered at the Jackson County Sheriff's office. He wasreleased on a $50,000 bond.

A call seeking comment from Singing River FCU President/CEO James B. Smith Jr. was notreturned by press time.

The state auditor's office said it received a request earlierfrom the Jackson County district attorney to provide assistance tothe Jackson County Sheriff's investigation of the allegedembezzlement.
