Thanks to volunteers from CAP COM Federal Credit Union, a newlyrenovated Vanderheyden Hall is home to nearly 50 adolescents whohave been abused, neglected or abandoned.

Volunteers with the $960 million credit union in Albany, N.Y.invested $20,000 and hundreds of volunteer hours this summer towardmaking significant improvements to Vanderheyden ResidentialTreatment Center's housing and recreational facilities inWynantskill, N.Y.

Upgrades at the facility include the purchase of new furniture,electronics and window treatments to replace much-used items andcreate a welcoming environment. In addition, all six housing unitshave been repainted and residents were invited to choose beddingthat expressed their own unique personalities.

The project also included restoration of the basketball courtand the purchase of outdoor recreational equipment and safety gearto encourage physical activity. The improvements were made withhelp from Sherwin-Williams Paints, Taft Furniture, City MarkStriping and others who provided discounted products and services,the credit union said.

Established in 1833 as the Troy Orphan Asylum, Vanderheyden hasevolved to provide services and a safe haven for youth and adultswho have experienced family disruption, developmental, emotional orlearning problems. A nonprofit human services agency with themission of empowering children, adults and families to buildbrighter futures, its residential treatment center providesservices and a safe haven for youth who have experienced familydisruption, developmental, emotional or learning problems.
