SAN DIEGO – The going joke at CUNA's Women's Leadership Summit was, at noon they've scheduled a mudslide. Attendees at the event, a first for CUNA, were treated to two potential natural disasters, California style. On Sunday, June 12, a 5.2 magnitude earthquake struck an area north of San Diego, which was felt by local residents and some arriving summit attendees. Then, a more serious 7.0 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Northern California the following Tuesday night, prompting a tsunami warning from the California-Mexico border north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia. The summit was held at the Hotel del Coronado, located on oceanfront property on Coronado Island off the coast of San Diego. Because the property was vulnerable to tsunami waves, some hotel guests left the property, although no CUNA summit participants were known to have left. "First an earthquake when they get here, and then a tsunami warning at night. We're proud to have survived our first summit in one piece," joked Andrea Hughes, Instructional Design Manager for CUNA and coordinator of the summit.
