BEAVERTON, Ore. – With bank attacks on the increase and credit unions facing the possibility of taxation, the Credit Union Association of Oregon's Board of Directors voted and approved an official Statement of Unity demonstrating Oregon credit unions' commitment to a united front. By signing the statement, the board said it wanted "to draw on their strength to unite together for the good of the Credit Union Movement." The four State of Unity principles include: * every Oregonian has the right to have access to credit union membership; * every chartered credit union abides by the cooperative principles; * a member-owned cooperative structure justifies a credit union's federal or state income tax exemption; and * unity is strength. The CUAO Board intends to ask credit unions throughout the state to sign the Statement of Unity. "Unifying Oregon's credit unions is a must. We all need to work together to ensure the credit union movement continues on a positive, forward path, and that Oregon's 1.3 million members continue to be our top priority," said CUAO Chairman Dal King. He added that the Statement of Unity is "the first step in ensuring we are all on the same page."
