Security Service Federal Credit Union, San Antonio, recentlydonated $16,229.35 to The Children's Shelter of San Antonio. Themoney was raised through a month-long fundraiser where SSFCU Texasservice centers sold popcorn and candy, held raffles, and had bakesales. The funds will be used to support programs for children inthe San Antonio area and nurture children who have been abused,abandoned and neglected and are now receiving care from TheChildren's Shelter. Taking part in a long-standing tradition, 14Consumers Credit Union employees, Waukegan, Ill., put on theirwalking shoes and togas to raise money for cancer research. TheAmerican Cancer Society's Greater Waukegan Relay for Life was heldat Bevier Park in Waukegan. CCU's dedicated walkers braved the rainuntil early morning, raising an impressive $4,626.50–and the CUadded a 50% match to that amount. Top performers included TeamCaptain Judy Dziedzic, who raised $550, including the credit unionmatch; former CCU President Bill Reidel came in second, raising$480, and Sarah Faulkner, counter service representative in RoundLake Beach, raised $442.50. The top three fundraisers receivedAmerican Express Gift Cheques as thanks for a job well done. AlturaCredit Union, Riverside, Calif., helped promote fitness among areahigh school students by offering $1,000 to the local high schoolthat enrolled the most students in California Gov. Schwarzenegger'sfitness effort, called the Governor's Fitness Challenge. ElsinoreHigh School was awarded the $1,000 for recruiting more than 400students to participate in the program. The donated funds will beused to purchase fitness equipment for the school. People's TrustFederal Credit Union, Houston, recently set an attendance recordfor the number of participants attending a National Endowment forFinancial Education workshop in 2006. Courtney Nichols, assistantdirector of the Texas Credit Union Foundation, instructedparticipants in teaching financial literacy to elementary, highschool, college students, adults and senior citizens. Linda Birt,community outreach director of the CU, presented Damitra Myles ofthe Downtown YMCA Residential Services with $1,500 for the purchaseof a new computer for the residential center. While teachingfinancial literacy to residents at the YMCA, Birt became aware of acritical need for residents to be able to upgrade their job skillsfor today's market. People's Trust is proud to teach financialliteracy at the Downtown Houston YMCA and give back to thecommunity. The Texas Credit Union Foundation sponsored the NEFE“Train the Trainer” workshop for credit union employees, educatorsand community partners. People's Credit Union, Middletown, R.I.,recently sponsored Emily Dyer in the Rhode Island Credit UnionLeague's scholarship program and she received a $500 scholarshipfrom the league. Dyer was selected from hundreds of applicantssubmitted by credit unions throughout Rhode Island. Applicationswere evaluated on a variety of criteria including the student'sacademic performance, financial need, extracurricular activitiesand the quality and content of an essay that addressed theapplicant's intended major field of study and career goals. Dyerwill continue her education at Syracuse University in the fall. DCUfor Kids, the charitable foundation of Digital Federal CreditUnion, Marlborough, Mass., held two fundraising events recentlythat raised a record $270,000 for the Boomer Esiason Foundation.The first fundraising event, “An Evening with Boomer,” was held atthe DCU Center where the veteran quarterback of 14 years with theCincinnati Bengals, New York Jets, and Arizona Cardinals andtelevision and radio commentator gave a heartfelt commentary aboutthe fight against cystic fibrosis. Accompanying his dad was 14 yearold Gunner Esiason, who was diagnosed at age two with cysticfibrosis. The other fundraising event was the 7th Annual CharityGolf Tournament held at Wedgwood Pines Country Club in Stow. Over132 golfers participated in the event along with many majorsponsors including: Digital Insight, XP Systems, Fidelity NationalInformation Services, Clarke American, CO-OP Network, LendingSolutions Inc., Eascorp, NES Group, Pro-Teck Services and OUTBACKSteakhouse to name a few. Boomer again addressed the crowd with hisson and applauded everyone there for helping in the fight againstcystic fibrosis. Arkansas Federal Credit Union, Jacksonville, Ark.,recently announced the winners of its annual $1,000 collegescholarship program. The winners were Christopher Clinton, RussellDorsey III and La'Shonda Nowden. Each year AFCU awards $1,000college scholarships to honor and assist well-rounded andacademically talented students in the state of Arkansas as theyfurther their education and prepare for the challenging careersthat lie ahead. MaPS Credit Union, Salem, Ore., recently named therecipients of its 2006 scholarship awards. Maria E. Rosas Bautistareceived a MaPS Business Partner Scholarship of $1,500; Paige L.Morton received a MaPS Credit Union Scholarship of $1,000; andEzekiel S. Earl received a MaPS Credit Union Scholarship of $1,000.Nutmeg State Federal Credit Union, Rocky Hill, Conn., announced theArthur E. Werner Memorial Scholarship winners for 2006. This year,four $2,000 scholarships were awarded. Recipients were Molly White,James Flannery, Robert Smith and Victoria Woronecki.
