HARTFORD, Conn. — The U.S. Senate race between incumbent Joe Lieberman, running as an independent, against the anti-war Democrat Ned Lamont is posing "a nice dilemma" for the Connecticut Credit Union Association. That's because "both candidates have strengths and are friends of credit unions," said Kevin Chandler, president/CEO of CCUA, in commenting on the association's fence-straddling in the Nov. 7 election. "We got folks in both camps and so we are in the enviable position of having two candidates who support credit unions," said Chandler. Meanwhile, CCUA is concentrating on state races and leaving national contests like this Senate race to CUNA, which has endorsed Lieberman, one of the original H.R. 1151 signers. National polls in September showed Lieberman ahead by 10% over the anti-war Lamont. The GOP contender, Alan Schlesinger has been running a distant third.
