Kankakee Credit Union, Bradley, Ill., has teamed up with the Kankakee County Sheriff's Department to offer an important safety tool-fingerprinting children as part of the department's Community Services program. After the children were fingerprinted, a kit, including the fingerprints, was given to the parents, grandparents, or guardians. Over 150 children were fingerprinted, ranging from babies to young teenagers. To keep the children entertained, the Sheriff's Department offered several types of give-away's for the children including a small squeezable pig and temporary tattoos. Alabama Credit Union, Tuscaloosa, has helped finance distribution of Child I.D. Kits to local schools. The National Child I.D. Kit program, co-sponsored by the American Football Coaches Association, America's Credit Unions, the F.B.I., and local law enforcement authorities, also has a strong local supporter in The University of Alabama Football Coach Mike Shula. Once parents obtain a kit, it's a simple matter of taking hair samples and fingerprints for each child, and placing a current photo in the envelope. In the unfortunate event of a child's disappearance, the envelope provides immediate help to law enforcement authorities in their efforts to locate the child.
