Greater Nevada Federal Credit Union, Carson City, has partneredwith the American Cancer Society's Relay for Life as its first-evercredit union corporate-sponsored community event. Approximatelytwo-thirds of Greater Nevada employees participated in at least oneof the Relay for Life events held in Reno, Carson City, Elko andMinden, Nevada. Matching all the funds raised by employees thecredit union donated over $ 38,000 to the ACS to further research.T&C Federal Credit Union, Bloomfield Hills, Mich., was a silversponsor for the “National Night Out Against Crime” held in Pontiac.The event was developed to help the community recognize the PontiacPolice, Fire, and Rescue Teams. As part of the festivities,demonstrations included the Fire Department rapelling from thePhoenix parking structure with a fire dog, a Rescue Teamdemonstrating the use of “jaws of life” to rescue an accidentvictim, and presentations from the Police Department's K-9 Unit andCycle Unit. Six T&C FCU volunteers participated at the event,which included face painting. Travis Credit Union, Vacaville,Calif., has teamed up with Solano Crimestoppers, Inc. and donated$5,000 to the organization's reward fund. Crimestoppers provideslocal law enforcement with information regarding criminal activitybased on anonymous tips from citizens who witness a crime and callthe Crimestoppers Tip Line. Callers whose information leads to anarrest are eligible to receive a cash reward. Travis CU'scontribution is one of the largest made in support of the program.American Eagle Federal Credit Union, East Hartford, Conn., hasrecently participated in the United Way Day of Caring. The Day ofCaring has been an annual tradition since 1992, marking 14 years ofteamwork and service from companies, employees, students, teachers,cities, towns, and community-minded citizens. Thirteen AmericanEagle Federal Credit Union employees volunteered their timecreating goody bags, preparing signs, and organizing rosters forthe Marathon, among other activities. Columbia Municipal EmployeesCredit Union, Columbia, Mo., has raised nearly $2,000 for theChildren's Miracle Network through such fundraising activities asbake sales and skip-a-payment match options. CMN is a nonprofitorganization that helps treat 14 million sick children each year at170 hospitals across the country. USA Federal Credit Union, SanDiego, Calif., and the Armed Forces Financial Network (AFFN) haspresented a $4,000 sponsorship grant to support the YongsanGarrison, South Korea Morale, Welfare and Recreation (MWR) 2005Columbus Day Celebration. The sponsorship grant will assist the MWRwith its mission to contribute to the troops and their families atYongsan Garrison and nearby bases in South Korea. Fort BelvoirFederal Credit Union, Woodbridge, Va., has donated $1,500 to ArmyFamily Team Building on Fort Belvoir. Armed Forces FinancialNetwork (AFFN) matched this donation providing a combinedcontribution of $3,000. Army Family Team Building is a programdesigned to improve overall military readiness by advancingpersonal and family preparedness through training classes, whichhelp family members adapt to change and become more self-reliant.Army Family Team Building offers programs for spouses who are newto the military, are involved in the unit and community, want tolearn for personal growth, and want to improve their leadershipskills. Postal Credit Union, Woodbury, Minn., has recentlypurchased, filled and donated 30 backpacks to local shelters andschool supplies to local schools in the greater St. Paulmetropolitan area. Each backpack contained a variety of schoolsupplies, such as pencils, notebooks, a ruler, colored markers,pocket folders, and more. Employees were asked to pick up extraswhile shopping for their own students prior to the start of theschool year. Southwestern Chapter of Credit Unions, St. Joseph,Mich., has raised over $2,200 for the Children's Miracle Networkthrough its 2nd annual Credit Union Softball Challenge. The coedtournament included teams from Berrien Teachers CU, First ResourceFCU, Greater Niles Community FCU, and United FCU. The BerrienTeachers Credit Union “Llamas” carted off the first place trophy,upending the UFCU “Golden Glovers” 11-4 in the title contest. TheUFCU team won last year's tourney. Lacamas Community Credit Union,Portland, Ore., staffers and members have joined over 45,000 in theSusan Komen Portland Race for the Cure. As one of the largestfundraising events on the West Coast, some $2 million total wasraised to help in the breast cancer fight. The organization isprimarily driven by volunteers and of the net proceeds raised, 75%remains in local Oregon and SW Washington communities. The other25% funds breast cancer research. Maine Credit Union League,Westbrook, staffers have spent the summer collecting hundreds ofbears and other stuffed animals for its BearHugs for Kids program.The League has recently shipped 48 boxes containing over 600 teddybears to the Sheriff's Departments in each of Maine's 16 counties.The shipment insures that law enforcement officials can distributethe bears to children in crisis in every region of the state. Since1997 the Maine Credit Unions' BearHugs for Kids program has helpeddistribute more than 10,000 bears to law enforcement agencies. NewJersey Credit Union Foundation, Hightstown, has raised $10,000 tobenefit financial literacy, education and area small credit unionsduring the NJCUF Second Annual Golf Outing. Some 46 golfersparticipated in the popular fundraiser. Sponsors that also teed offincluded CUNA Mutual Group, CUNA Mutual Mortgage, CUSC, EmpireCorporate FCU and Mid-Atlantic Corporate FCU.
