WASHINGTON-In July, the Credit Union Legislative Action Councilof CUNA has risen quickly through the ranks to consistently rankingamong the nation's largest trade association political actioncommittees, if not one of the largest PACs overall. Right now,CULAC is ranked about third for contributions to federalcandidates, according to CUNA Senior Vice President of PoliticalAffairs Richard Gose, but he cautioned that it is very early in theelection cycle and some choose to provide greater contributionslater on. In July, $125,000 in contributions were made to CULAC andthe PAC put out $113,000 to federal candidates. CULAC crossed the$1 million mark for the year-to-date. The largest contributions forJuly went to Florida State Senator Les Miller (D), who will make arun for Congressman Jim Davis' seat who is running for governor, at$5,000 and Michigan Democrat Bart Stupak ($5,000). Another $5,000went to Ohio State Representative Jean Schmidt (R), who recentlywon a special election to Congressman Rob Portman's (R) seat whowas appointed the U.S. Trade Representative by President Bush.Senator Mike Crapo's (R-Idaho) Freedom Fund also received $5,000,while Republican leadership PAC AmeriPAC garnered $2,500. Otherlarge contributions went to Congressman Dave Camp (R-Mich; $3,250);Dale Kildee (D-Mich.; $2,500); Lane Evans (D-Ill.; $2,500); andPhil Gingrey (R-Ga.; $2,200). [email protected]
