HERNDON, Va. – When NCUA became victim of a phishing scheme a few weeks ago, Digital Mailer here was ready to step in and help its client credit unions get the word out to members via e-mail. Digital Mailer, a firm that specializes in electronic statements and electronic alerts (e-LERTs), said one of its clients, Woodbridge, Va.-based Fort Belvoir FCU, came up with the idea of creating an e-LERT on the phishing and sending it to members through the Digital Mailer system. Digital Mailer decided to work with its other clients to get the word out and has so far sent out 40,000 member e-mails with more CUs still interested. The company said problems like phishing are just another reason why CUs should try to get members' permission to send them e-mail. While no one wants more spam these days, surveys and studies do show that consumers are open to receiving e-mail alerts on unusual banking activity with their accounts. A recent Wall Street Journal story reported that 73% of consumers highly valued such alerts.
