WASHINGTON-Top CUNA and NAFCU officials and lobbyists werepounding the marble of the congressional office buildings Jan. 4 asswearing-in ceremonies took place on the first day of the 109thCongress. In the morning, representatives from NAFCU met with bothAlaska Senators Ted Stevens (R) and Lisa Murkowski (R). They alsowelcomed Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), a former member of the House, tohis new seat in the Senate. CUNA Vice President of LegislativeAffairs and Senior Legislative Counsel Gary Kohn explained thatCUNA had more than half-a-dozen staff there and were joined in Hillvisits by officials and credit unions from 12 state leagues. “Itwas a busy day altogether, but it was a good day,” Kohn said. NAFCUalso cosponsored an event for Speaker of the House Dennis Hastert(R-Ill.) that evening. NAFCU and CUNA worked with others tocosponsor a separate event for House Majority Leader Tom DeLay(R-Texas) the same night. The DeLay event was supporting the U.S.Capitol Historical Society.
