MADISON, Wis. -The Office of Professional Employees International Union Local 39 has said all along that there would be few problems shoring up a new collective bargaining agreement with less than 70 unionized employees of CUNA, and the union was right. OPEIU Local 39 Business Manager John Peterson said that CUNA leaders have always been willing to sit down face to face to hammer out a deal. The two sides do have a new deal (goes into effect Jan. 1) as expected, but even Peterson admits comparing CUNA and CUNA Mutual doesn't hold water. The sheer difference in size of the labor groups – less than 70 at CUNA and approximately 1,300 at CUNA Mutual – makes the CUNA Mutual situation much more difficult regardless of any animosity or past history. Peterson said however that there is one similarity between CUNA and CUNA Mutual. For the last few years at CUNA there has been a performance-based pay system in place, which CUNA Mutual is seeking. Peterson said getting the performance plan implemented did take many months of negotiation, albeit not under the pressure of an expired collective bargaining agreement, such is the case at CUNA Mutual.
