BRAINERD, Minn. – Racing goldfish helped attendees at the 2004 Minnesota Credit Union Network (MnCUN) Fall Conference raise over $3,500 for CULAC. The competition featured eight fish per race, personally chosen by the contestants for five dollars each. "This type of fundraiser is an interactive way to bring people into the political process that might not normally consider contributing to CULAC or a political campaign," said Joe Mathews, MnCUN Director of Governmental Affairs. Fish races included qualifying heats and semifinals before the winners were determined. In addition to the races, the MnCUN Political Involvement Committee (PIC) also held a prize drawing for CULAC and sold "mulligans" during the golf tournament to benefit Credit Union Volunteer Committte, which is the CU political action committee that supports credit union-friendly candidates running for political office on the state level. "The vast majority of people who contribute to CULAC and CUVOL are credit union CEOs," Mathews said. "We like to reach out to other credit union staff and board members by creating new and unique opportunities to participate."
