<p>WASHINGTON-In response to a letter to the editor in the American Banker from American Bankers Association Executive Vice President Donald Ogilvie that called NAFCU President and CEO Fred Becker's comment that credit unions serve people better than banks a "real stretch," Becker wrote his own letter rebutting Ogilvie's. "When it comes to customer/member satisfaction, credit unions stand head and shoulders above banks year in and year out – a margin of 17% in `very satisfied' scores in 2001," he wrote. "In terms of service and lower fees, credit unions do top banks for everyone, as often noted by the editors of the nation's largest newspapers. In addition, consumer groups consistently rate credit unions higher in services such as maintaining a checking account or paying ATM fees." Becker added that some banks do provide exemplary service, but typically do not provide low- to no-fee services as credit unions do. "Why else would these same groups recommend, as U.S. PIRG did last year, that anyone who needs a basic checking account consider a credit union rather than a bank?" Becker wrote.</p>
