Overall charitable giving to nonprofit organizations grew robustly in the June-to-August period compared with the same period last year, according to the latest Blackbaud Charitable Giving Index, but growth in donations slowed as the summer progressed.

“Not surprisingly, it appears that our country’s continuing economic problems are once again weighing on donors’ checkbooks,” Chuck Longfield, Blackbaud’s chief scientist and creator of The Blackbaud Index, said in a statement.

The Blackbaud Index of Charitable Giving and The Blackbaud Index of Online Giving, which are updated monthly, are based on a three-month moving average of year-over-year percentage changes in U.S.-based charitable giving.

In a report released Tuesday, the Blackbaud Index of Charitable Giving showed that overall charitable revenue grew by 6.8% for the three months to the end of August, based on $2.3 billion in 12 months’ revenue from 1,276 nonprofit organizations.

During this period, overall charitable revenue for organizations with prior year revenue of less than $1 million increased by 19.3% in August, decreased by 0.3% at organizations with prior year revenue of $1 million to $10 million and grew by 6.4% at groups with prior year revenue of more than $10 million.

Online revenue for the June-to-August period increased by 6.1%, compared with the same period in 2010. This trend is based on $426 million in 12 months’ online revenue from 1,780 organizations.

As part of its latest report, Blackbaud rolled out a new specialty index, focused on the health-care sub-sector, which will be updated monthly. Constituents are organizations that provide care, such as clinics and hospitals, as well as health-related research facilities, disease-specific organizations for research or patient/family support, mental health services and research, and health policy centers.

For the three months to the end of August, the new sub-sector showed an overall revenue decrease of 5.5%, compared with the same period in 2010. This trend is based on $440 million in 12 months’ revenue from 184 organizations. At the same time, health-care organizations’ online revenue increased by 3.1%, based on $205 million in 12 months’ revenue from 472 organizations.
