Women with public pensions get more retirement income than men with private-sector pensions.

Researchers at the Employee Benefit Research Institute, Washington, have published data supporting that conclusion in an analysis of 2006 pension income figures for U.S. residents age 50 and older from the U.S. Census Bureau.

Half of women with a private-sector pension received less than $4,800 in annual pension or retirement annuity income, while half of women with public-sector pensions received more than $12,300 in annual retirement benefits, the EBRI researchers report.

Half of men with public-sector pensions received more than $22,800 in annual retirement benefits, but half of men with private-sector pensions received less than $10,548 in annual benefits, the researchers report.
