A federal panel says the government should take care when considering coverage for genetic tests and services.

The panel, the Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society for the secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, has released a report suggesting that HHS should seek more data and fund studies if necessary before making any recommendations about genetic testing coverage.

America’s Health Insurance Plans, Washington, has issued a statement welcoming the report.

“AHIP and its member companies have long believed in the importance of basing coverage decisions on medical evidence,” AHIP President Karen Ignagni says in a statement.

Organizers of all health care reform efforts should make a similar effort to base decisions on solid evidence, Ignagni says.
