Humana Inc., a health insurer that is especially strong in the Southeast and Midwest, is adding a health savings account option for all commercial groups that use its Smart plan program.[@@]

Humana, Louisville, Ky., bundles a variety of participant education programs, incentive programs and Web-based administration tools together with Smart plan coverage.

Humana began offering high-deductible, HSA-compatible health coverage to individual customers in November 2004.

Employers with 2 or more employees that adopt the new Smart plan HSA option will get a package of administrative services that includes a special HSA Visa debit card, Humana says.

Investment options will include several groups of mutual funds.

Humana has picked UMB Corp., Kansas City, Mo., to administer the Smart plan HSA plans.

Humana notes that it offered an HSA option to its own employees during open enrollment for 2005-2006 health benefits. About half of the employees chose the HSA option, Humana reports.
