A Nutmeg State insurer is expanding its line of universal life insurance products.[@@]

The insurer, Hartford Life, a unit of Hartford Financial Services Group Inc., Hartford, says it has designed its new Hartford Advanced Last Survivor UL policy to appeal to couples.

The “second to die” policy insures 2 people and pays a death benefit when the second insured dies.

Hartford Life Insurance Company and Hartford Life and Annuity Insurance Company, the Hartford units issuing the policies, are offering 5 underwriting classes for the policy, including a new preferred plus non-nicotine class for healthy insureds ages 20 to 85.

The company also is offering a policy protection rider that can help keep the policy in force as long as the value of a special policy protection account remains positive.

Hartford Life is including a free estate tax repeal rider that will let policyholders surrender their coverage without paying surrender charges if the federal estate tax is repealed in January 2011.

Another rider, an estate protection rider, will pay an additional death benefit if both insureds die within 4 years of the policy issue date.
