Principal Financial Group Inc., Des Moines, Iowa., has hired Richard Lawson to be a vice president of federal government relations.[@@]

Lawson will work in Washington and succeed Stuart Brahs, who is retiring.

Lawson will focus on retirement and investor services issues.

Principal’s other federal government relations vice president, R. Lucia Riddle, handles issues related to life insurance, health insurance, privacy and tort reform, Principal says.

Lawson has been executive director of the American Academy of Actuaries, Washington, since 1999. He also has served as a staffer on Capitol Hill.

Lawson has a bachelor’s degree from the College of William and Mary and a law degree from Emory University.
