WellPoint Acquires Health Product Evaluation Company

NU Online News Service, Nov. 11, 2003, 8:56 a.m. EST – WellPoint Health Networks Inc., Thousand Oaks, Calif., has used a subsidiary, WellPoint Horizons, to acquire Health Core Inc., Newark, Del.

Health Core, a privately held company founded in 1996, studies the effects of new drugs, medical devices and other technologies on health outcomes.

The value of the deal and other terms are not available.

WellPoint, a managed care company that provides or administers health insurance for 14 million people, notes that it created its Horizons subsidiary earlier this year to acquire 18% of an international travel and health insurance services company.

WellPoint recently agreed to be acquired by a smaller managed care company, Anthem Inc., Indianapolis.
