NU Online News Service, Aug. 19, 2003, 12:06 p.m. EDT – Aetna Inc., Hartford, says it has negotiated a settlement agreement with the American Dental Association, Chicago.

If the courts approve the settlement, Aetna would spend about $5 million to resolve a dispute over Aetna’s procedures for handling dental insurance claims and relations with the dentists who participate in its provider networks.

Aetna would pay $4 million directly to the dentists and contribute $1 million to the ADA Foundation.

Aetna also would establish a dental advisory committee, try to process clean claims more quickly, disclose its procedures for editing claims and give dentists more tools for tracking claims through the Web.
