Former Library Earmarked for Nonprofit Redevelopment

CHICAGO-A former branch of the Chicago Public Library is being offered for sale to nonprofit developers willing to create space for social service users, such as a day care center. The city’s department of planning and development has put out a request for proposals for a 14,450-sf building at 2450 N. Sawyer Ave. in the Logan Square neighborhood.

The city’s most recent appraisal of the property, which includes a 12,100-sf site zoned RS-3, is $816,000. However, no minimum price has been set for the 53-year-old, three-story building.

Among the uses the city would like to see at the southwest corner of Sawyer and Altgeld avenues include day care or social service centers. Proposals are due Jan. 12. The department of planning and development says proposals from for-profit developers will be rejected.
