SUTTON MA-Home Depot Inc. withdrew its plans to build a trucking facility in Shrewsbury and will instead focus on building the facility here instead. The company has filed plans with the town for the project.

A group of Shrewsbury residents were opposed to the Atlanta, GA-based company building the facility in their town, but reportedly Home Depot insists that the change of venue has nothing to do with the local opposition. Home Depot Spokesperson John E. Smiley did not return calls by presstime, but he is quoted as saying that the decision was made because of the Sutton site’s proximity to major highways. The Sutton site is in the South Sutton Commerce Park near Route 146.

In Shrewsbury, residents objected to the noise and traffic they thought the project would bring and did not want a truck facility in their town. Nevertheless, the Shrewsbury Conservation Commission and Planning Board had approved the plan. Shrewsbury residents are reportedly now hoping to rezone the property for office or research and development use.

In Sutton, the proposal also faces opposition from local residents who are also concerned about the potential noise and traffic. Plans for the facility include a 115,000-sf building with room for a 34,000-sf expansion. The plan also calls for 299 tractor-trailer spaces and 153 dock doors.
