WEST BLOOMFIELD, MI – Specialty grocery store chain Trader Joe’s Co. plans to build seven stores in the Southeast Michigan area. While sites have not yet been formally approved, the company wants to begin construction next year on 10,000-sf facilities in Ann Arbor, Birmingham, Rochester, Plymouth, Novi, and West Bloomfield. Ann Arbor may have two stores, says Janice Jacobs, president of the Agrarian Group of West Bloomfield.

The stores carry a mix of domestic and imported foods and beverages. It’s become a very popular store, says Jacobs, who is handling the site selection for the South Pasadena-based grocery chain. “Many stores attain sales of $1,000 psf,” Jacobs says.

The food company has about 160 stores. Michigan is the company’s second Midwest venture after Chicago, and is the 14th state to receive the chain stores.
