ATLANTA-Lowe’s Home Improvement Warehouse has come on strong in Home Depot’s home town. In metro Atlanta, the $16 billion, North Wilkesboro, NC-based retailer is building its 16th metro Atlanta store.

The 135,000-sf structure is in the Chamblee area on a former Frito-Lay Inc. site. The estimated construction cost of the project is $14 million.

The store is scheduled to open in May 2001. The home improvement retailer has more than 600 stores in 40 states and is currently opening a store per week nationwide. In metro Atlanta, Lowe’s has built 15 stores in three years with plans for more.
