Atlanta-based Home Depot plans to nearly double the number of its Portland area stores in the next three years, While North Carolina-based Lowe’s Cos. Inc. will open two of its home improvement superstores in the next 12 months.

Home Depots new stores will be in Northeast and east Portland, southern Beaverton, Oregon City, Sherwood and Troutdale. Lowe’s new stores will be in Tigard and Wood Village. Both companies’ stores typically exceed 100,000 sf.

Home Depot is building one of its first stores with rooftop parking on a four-acre parcel in Northeast Portland’s Hollywood District for which it signed a 20-year lease. It will replace the Davis Business Center, forcing 90 businesses somewhere else. Owner Andy Davis notified tenants at the first of the month, telling them they can remain until 2002.

Only one of the six Home Depot stores – the one in Troutdale – is under construction. Municipal approvals are still being sought for the rest.
