$12 Million Stockcar Racing Museum Going Up

DAWSONVILLE, GA-Hoping to attract aficionados from around the country, the 40,000-sf Thunder Road USA, about 60 miles north of Atlanta, will house memorabilia, a hall of fame, interactive simulators, theaters and restaurants.

A joint venture of the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame, the town of Dawsonville and Dawson County are constructing Thunder Road USA, a $12 million, 40,000-sf stockcar racing museum on 44 acres about 60 miles north of Atlanta. Completion is set for spring 2001.

Hoping to attract aficionados from around the country, the project will house memorabilia, a hall of fame, interactive simulators (drive a virtual track), theaters and restaurants. Dawsonville native and NASCAR driver Bill Elliott plans to donate some of his own items to the museum. Autosports are big business in metro Atlanta, where there are five racetracks within or near the metro area.
