The New Jersey shore will never look exactly the way residentsand vacationers remember it. Photos from Gov. Chris Christie'soffice reveal the famous Seaside Heights boardwalk is devastated.Houses were knocked from foundations by storm surge all along theshoreline.

The following photos are from the governor's Oct. 30 helicoptertour of the destruction before he stopped in Belmar and Avalon,N.J. to meet with local officials.

The famous boardwalk at Seaside Heights, N.J.

Most of the boardwalk's piers were destroyed, and many of therides fell into the ocean.

Here's a Facebook post on Oct. 31 from the Seaside HeightsFire Department:

“Here we are after it all. Seaside is a total loss. Both pierscollapsed. Boardwalk destroyed. Beach is up to boulevard. Houses,cars, personal belongings floating around. Still 4ft of water atleast around. Pelican Island is underwater. No access on or off thebridge. We've been doing hundreds of water rescues. A lot of ourguys saving people and standing by watched as we lost everything,Our houses and possessions. We'll get through this somehow.”
