The insurance and journalism worlds lost one of its bestlast week when Philip "Phil" Schreiner passed away on Dec. 10,2009, after a short battle with lung cancer.

|

Phil took over as editor in chief of Claims Magazine inlate 2000, and retired from the magazine in May 2008. It was underhis leadership that the magazine went through several successfulredesigns and launched its web site. Throughout his 40-year career,he was the winner of almost two dozen Jesse H. Neal Awards fromAmerican Business Media -- journalistic awards often referred to asthe "Pulitzer" of business media -- and brought the magazine intothe 21st century with ease while maintaining a strict sense ofeditorial integrity. He covered groundbreaking claim issues thatranged from mold and asbestos to insurance implications of 9/11 andHurricane Katrina.

Besides his accomplishments at the magazine, of which there weremany, Phil was a friend to many and beloved by those in and out ofthe industry for his larger-than-life personality, his knowledge, and his poise. He was very fond of movie quotes and adages, and inhis first editorial for Claims, wisely noted that "Nothinglasts forever." Unfortunately for everyone who had the pleasure ofhaving their lives touched by him, he was correct. He will bemissed immensely by all, but most notably by his wife Therese andhis three children Henry, Greg, and Tracee.
