Pfizer, the world's largest drug maker, said Tuesday the Austrian patent office confirmed the validity of the company's patent for Lipitor, the world's best-selling prescription drug. The company is waging a country-by-country battle against Indian drug maker Ranbaxy Laboratories to protect the patents covering the cholesterol-lowering drug. Pfizer has had success defending Lipitor patents in the United States, the Netherlands, Britain and Norway, and is in the early legal stages in several other nations.

Pfizer Inc., the world’s largest drug maker, said Tuesday the Austrian patent office confirmed the validity of the company’s patent for Lipitor, the world’s best-selling prescription drug.
The company said the ruling can be appealed but the validity of the patent will remain in effect during that process.
