Will wasn’t just impressive on paper. Tall and good-looking, he was self-assured and easygoing. His politics were left of center, and he stayed true to those values. After stints at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and Coudert Brothers in law school, he returned to Vermont and eventually set up his own general practice in Windsor, a hamlet near the New Hampshire border. There he handled the everyday problems of a small-town clientele — divorces, incorporations, personal bankruptcies, criminal defense, welfare payment disputes — generously taking on clients other lawyers wouldn’t touch because they couldn’t pay.
